What you need to know before traveling to Algeria

Drinks:

Algeria being a Muslim country, some hotels and restaurants may not serve alcohol.

Local time:

UTC+1

Climate:

The north of Algeria enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate, while the south is characterized by a Saharan climate. The spring and autumn seasons offer pleasant climatic conditions throughout the country.

Health:

Health conditions in Algeria are good and no special precautions are required, apart from avoiding drinking tap water, preferring mineral water. No vaccinations are required to enter Algeria. However, it is advisable to be up to date with DT Polio and hepatitis A and B vaccinations. We recommend that you take a small first-aid kit including intestinal treatments, antibiotic cream, sun cream, eye drops, broad-spectrum antibiotics, insect repellents and bandages.

Change:

The local currency is the Algerian dinar, divided into 100 centimes. Exchange is possible at banks, ports and airports, some hotels, and sometimes at customs. It is advisable to change gradually, as Algerian dinars are difficult to convert outside the country.

Dress code:

Whatever the season, prefer light, practical cotton clothing and a woollen jacket for the evening. When visiting, wear comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a head covering. Shorts, tank tops and provocative outfits are not recommended, especially for women, as “too light” clothing may prevent access to churches and mosques.

Electricity:

The current is 220 volts and the plugs are European type.

Photography:

It is forbidden to take photos or film in museums and certain sites. Drone and binoculars prohibited

Tips:

Gratuities in hotels and restaurants are included in our rates, as are those given to porters at the airport. It is customary, but not obligatory, to give drivers around €3 per day per person, and local guides around €5 per day per person, if you are satisfied with their services.

Customs:

The import of foreign currency is authorized without restriction, but under strict control. Foreign currency must be declared on entry to the country on a special slip, which is kept for all foreign exchange transactions and must be presented to customs on exit to re-export any unused balance.
